Read chapter 1 of K&R and do all of the exercises.

The exercises are broken down with each subsection as it's own assignment.

People using Linux (and Mac I think) will probably be up and running with the first assignment in no time. For people using Windows, this page has a list of some compilers to try. If you have any info that might help others get started, feel free to include that info in your homework.
